Little Book Cliffs Wild Horse Area—Coal Canyon Trailhead
On this excursion, you can either choose to horseback ride or hike in hopes of seeing wild horses in the canyon. When Melinda and I rode the canyon, a few years ago, we saw at least 4 or 5 small bands of wild horses and each band had its own stallion. I was pleasantly surprised that we were able to observe them at fairly close range. Of course, we can’t guarantee that we will have the same experience this trip, but we will certainly hope to encounter these magnificent animals and perhaps see some foals as well! Bottom line—it’s gonna be a great time of fellowship for all who are able to make the trip!
Friday the 6th , we will meet at The Wilson Ranch, 19450 Murphy Road, Peyton between 10:30–11:00AM John can haul up to four horses on his trailer, and if you want him to haul your horse, I (Pastor John) will ask you to contribute to the cost of fuel for the trip (650 to 700 miles round trip).
If we all leave by noon, we should arrive in Rifle Colorado at approximately 5:00 PM. At Rifle, I have arranged for a good friend, Eric Brynildson, to keep our horses overnight. Eric has a large arena, and can also put some of the horses in individual pens if needed. Water is also available, but we should bring our own hay.
There are various restaurants in Rifle: Culvers, McDonalds, and Rib City Grill is a favorite. I have booked rooms at the Comfort Inn, and the lady I talked to is giving us a special rate of $85.00 which is very good because I checked prices at two other motels in Rifle. Of course, this will be the start of their busy season, so she’s giving us a price break.
We will eat breakfast at the Comfort Inn, and, after breakfast go to Eric’s place to get our horses loaded. We will drive approximately 45 miles west on I-70 to Exit 45 (Cameo Exit) and proceed up to the Coal Canyon Trailhead where we will either Hike or Ride into the Wild Horse Area.
We should be back at the trailhead, loaded up and ready to head East by 1:00 to 1:30 and should be back to the Wilson Ranch by 7:00 to 8:00PM Saturday Evening.
We should pack a lunch into the Canyon and be sure to have plenty of water!! I’m sure looking forward to this adventure!
Onward & Upward
Pastor John
