Jesus Calms the Storm

In Matthew 8:23-27, Jesus calms a storm, demonstrating His authority over nature and highlighting the disciples’ need for faith.

In this sermon, Pastor Brett Lutz reflects on Matthew 8:23–27, where Jesus calms the storm on the Sea of Galilee. He sets the context by explaining the geographical conditions that make sudden storms on the Sea of Galilee common and dangerous. The disciples, overwhelmed by fear during the storm, wake Jesus, crying, “Save us, Lord, we are perishing!” Jesus rebukes their fear and lack of faith before calming the storm with a command.

Pastor Lutz draws a powerful parallel between the literal storm on the sea and the metaphorical storms we face in life—moments of fear, anxiety, and uncertainty. He emphasizes that while the disciples had followed Jesus into the boat, they still did not fully grasp who He was. Their fear reveals a lack of understanding of Jesus’ divine authority over creation.

Throughout the message, Pastor Lutz encourages listeners to consider how they respond in times of crisis: do we panic and rush to solve things ourselves, or do we turn to God in faith and prayer? He reminds us that Jesus, as the Lord of creation, not only has power over nature but also over the storms in our hearts and lives.

Using additional scriptures like Psalm 23, Matthew 6, John 14:27, and Philippians 4:6–7, Pastor Lutz reinforces the message that Christ offers peace that surpasses all understanding. His call to action is for believers to stop, pray, give thanks, and trust God’s power and timing—because He alone can calm our storms.

The core message: Jesus is not just present in the storm; He is sovereign over it. Faith in Him leads to peace, even when chaos surrounds us.
